Chapter Fourteen

Theo unravelled his cravat, leaving it to hang loose around his neck as he stepped down from the carriage, then turned to help first his sister-in-law, then his niece and finally Abigail down on to the pavement outside Salway House. He was particularly relieved they descended in that order since the flare of heat that shot up his arm as his fingers connected with Abigail’s had an immediately stirring effect on the rest of his body.

He wasn’t surprised by it any more. He’d been feeling hot under the collar ever since he’d touched her face and they’d almost—almost—kissed earlier, the strength of his attraction to her catching him off guard, so much that he’d found it hard to think about anything else all evening. He’d done his utmost to behave like a gentleman, but he still hadn’t been able to stay away from her.

Now, he was acutely aware of every tiny movement she made. Which was completely inappropriate, he reminded himself. No matter how much he liked and admired her, she was his secretary. Or companion. Or governess. Or something! The main point was that he was a gentleman and since he had no intention of offering marriage then he ought not to feel anything at all. On the contrary, he ought to apologise.

If only every part of his body wasn’t screaming out to touch her again...

He looked up and down the street to distract himself. Dawn wasn’t far off. The city would be waking soon, but for now the streets were still swathed in darkness. Despite a wobbly start, the evening had proven to be a triumphant success. Sabrina had somehow convinced most of the ton to feel sorry for her and Evelyn had been the belle of the ball. From now on, the house would probably be full of admirers and suitors. It was going to be hell.

‘Be careful.’ Sabrina called out as her daughter danced up the front steps and into the hallway, humming to herself. ‘Or you’ll bump into one of the pillars.’

‘It won’t hurt. Nothing can hurt me this morning.’ Evelyn whirled around giddily. ‘This has been the most wonderful night of my life.’

‘That’s all very well, but if you twist your ankle then you won’t be able to dance again for weeks.’

‘Oh.’ The dancing stopped abruptly. ‘I didn’t think of that.’

‘It’s time for bed anyway.’

‘But how can I possibly sleep now?’ Evelyn clutched her hands in front of her. ‘I have so much to think about, it’s like there are butterflies fluttering around inside my head. I want to relive every single moment of tonight. It was sublime.’

‘Then at least go and relive it lying down.’ Sabrina rolled her eyes. ‘Give your poor uncle some peace or he might change his mind about the rest of the Season.’

‘He wouldn’t do that. He’s the best and kindest uncle in the whole world.’

‘Can I have that in writing?’ Theo lifted an eyebrow.

‘I’ll make sure of it.’ Sabrina smiled over her daughter’s shoulder as they mounted the staircase together.
